Frank Moulaert, een gepassioneerd verzamelaar van het kleinste bonnetje of bierkaartje met een relevant idee erop geschreven, nam samen met de leden van de onderzoeksgroep Planning en Ontwikkeling, Ingenieursfaculteit KU Leuven, de verantwoordelijkheid op zich om een archief op te bouwen dat zijn loopbaan van 'cradle to cradle' documenteert (in tegenstelling tot het wat lugubere idioom 'cradle to coffin').

Het archief begint in zijn lagere school in Sint-Baafs Brugge (1957–1963), zet zich voort in Sint-Michiels (Sint-Lodewijkscollege) en de Potterierei (Sint-Leocollege), en later in de Prinsstraat in Antwerpen waar hij aan UFSIA Toegepaste Economie studeerde. Het documenteert zijn studies aan de KU Leuven (economie) en in de VS (University of Pennsylvania, regionale ontwikkeling), evenals zijn onderzoeks- en publicatiewerk aan de KU Leuven tussen 1974 en 1984. Zijn professorale carrière, ook gedetailleerd gedocumenteerd, begon aan de Université de Lille (1984–2002) zette zich verder aan Newcastle University (2002–2007) en vond vanaf 2008 zijn bekroning aan de KU Leuven.

Het archief documenteert ook zijn engagement in de scoutsbeweging en zijn activisme voor vreemdelingenrechten aan de Universitaire Parochie en het Front voor een Rechtvaardig Vreemdelingenstatuut, en voor sociaal-economische ontwikkeling via de actiegroep POLEKAR (Politieke Economie en Arbeid). Beide engagementen hadden een grote invloed op zijn academische oriëntatie, waarin armoedebestrijding, lokale ontwikkeling en samenwerkingsgerichte onderzoeksmethoden centraal staan.

Frank Moulaert, a passionate collector of even the smallest receipts or beer coasters bearing a relevant idea, took on the responsibility – together with the members of KU Leuven's Planning and Development research group at the Faculty of Engineering – of building an archive documenting his career from 'cradle to cradle' (as opposed to the somewhat grim idiom 'cradle to coffin').

The archive begins with his primary school years in Sint-Baafs Brugge (1957–1963), continues through the Sint-Michiels (Sint-Lodewijkscollege) and Potterierei (Sint-Leocollege) years, and follows through the Prinsstraat in Antwerp where he did his undergraduate studies in Applied Economics. It documents his studies in Economics at KU Leuven (Belgium) and in Regional Development at the University of Pennsylvania (United States), as well as his research and publication work at KU Leuven between 1974 and 1984. His academic career began at the Université de Lille (1984–2002), continued at Newcastle University (2002–2007), and reached its peak at KU Leuven (2008–2024) before (never really) concluding.

The archive also documents his involvement in the Scouts movement, his activism for migrant rights at the University Parish and with the Front voor een Rechtvaardig Vreemdelingenstatuut (Front for a Just Legal Statute for Migrants), and his dedication to socio-economic development through his leadership in the action group POLEKAR (Politieke Economie en Arbeid, Political Economy and Labour). Both of these pursuits had a significant impact on his academic focus, which centres on poverty reduction, local development, and research methods based on collaboration.
