Archival history:The eldest male of each generation, traditionally owned, kept and enhanced the family archives. The successive owners and locations were:
1. Jan De Smet (1691-1772) in Bornhem, Dendermonde
2. Judocus De Smet (1736-1827), Frans Courtensstraat, Dendermonde
3. François de Smet (1803-1878) and son Paul-Adr. (1842-1896), Keizer Karelstraat, Gent
4. Pierre de Smet (1882-1946), Albertlaan 13, Gent
5. Paul de Smet d’Olbecke (1912-2007) and son François (1940-), in 5 locations: in Chile-Chico, Coyhaike & Santiago, Chile and in Los Antiguos, Argentina.
In 1969 most of the letters and sketches of father De Smet were sold to the Washington State University Library. Copies were kept in the family-archives.
The remaining collection is in 2010 divided in the following parts:
1) the objects related to father P.J. De Smet to MAS, Antwerp
2) the documents & books related to PJ DS to KADOC, Leuven
3) the documents and books of the family archives to O.G.H.B., Brussels.

Information on content and structure

Content:These documents and books were collected and kept by family members of father De Smet. They consist mainly of studies on father De Smet, copies of his letters and some original drafts. They also collected documents of the ancestors and family members of father De Smet, who were in the eightteenth century rich negotiators and who became bourgeoisie in the nineteenth century. These papers illustrate this evolution and provides information about their possessions and income.
Appraisal and destruction:Nr. 296, maps of some Belgian cities and villages (German edition, 1941), has been removed.

Related archival material:The objects, who were originally part of this collection are preserved in the MAS (Museum Aan de Stroom) in Antwerp. The archive of the Jesuite province of Flanders holds another collection on father De Smet. Other information or archive on father De Smet can be found in Dendermonde in the Stedelijke Musea Dendermonde and in the archive of the St. Pieters- en Paulusabdij. Also in Saint Louis, Missouri in the Jesuit Missouri Province Archives, the Pius XII Memorial Library, St. Louis University and the Missouri Historical Society. Other documents can be found in the Museum of Western Jesuit Missions (Florissant, Missouri). The Oregon Prrovince Jesuit Archives in the Crosby Library of the Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington also keeps a collection on father De Smet. As mentioned before, the Washington State University preserves another part of the original family collection in the Manuscripts and Archives Division of the Holland Library. Other information can be found in the Oregon Historical Society and the Oregon Province of the Society of Jesus in Portland, Oregon.
